What is the correct humidity level for your home?

The answer is, every home is different, but there are several determining factors. A good place to start is around 30%. As you turn the dial on your humidistat, you will hear it click right around 30%. When it clicks, that is where you start. Pay attention for the next day or so – if there is condensation on the windows, turn the humidistat a bit lower. If the air still seems dry (shocks), turn it up a bit.  The colder it is outside, the more humidity we want, but make sure condensation is not forming on the windows. It is important that you have us check your humidifier every year so we can change the pad and check to be sure the water line is clear. If you do all of the above, your home should be healthy and comfortable!

What happens when you move into a new home that has an old thermostat? Ideally, you call us to replace it with a new smart thermostat. But what if, new or old, it’s in an awkward place? There are ways to “disguise” it. I think these are very clever ideas – let’s try one of them!

Warm Wishes

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from the Carlson Family to you and your family. It’s such a busy time of year, but your hvac equipment is busy working in the background to keep your home comfortable. Though the weather has been pretty mild for this area, it’s still important that you remember to have us clean and check your furnace for the season. This mild weather won’t last and you need to be prepared for the colder weather. Warmest wishes to all of you!

All filters are not created equal!

Beware of the filters you use. When you go to the hardware store to pick up new filters, you may see some filters which are self-described as “miracle filters”. They claim that they will catch a huge amount of the dirt that ordinary filters cannot stop. These filters are ultra dense and can result in a restriction of the air flow and can cause exactly the same problem that a dirty filter will. In our opinion, just stick with a regular filter.

The key is – change those throwaway filters regularly and if you have an electronic air cleaner, which will pick up most of the dirt in the air, wash it regularly. Do this and you’ll have a more comfortable home and a lower utility bill!
